The high-speed service provided by Renfe in Saudi Arabia has achieved its best traffic record since it began operating in October 2018. The public company has declared a total of 6.97 million travelers in 2023 on the Mecca line. Medina, which represents an increase of 90% over the volume of users from the previous year (3.67 million).
The record sets a record for high speed in the desert once Renfe increased the number of trips by 61%. The company led by Raül Blanco claims to have obtained an average punctuality of 97% for an infrastructure that faces high temperatures or the effect of sand on the roads every day.
The Haramain High-Speed Railway line is operated by a Spanish consortium in which Renfe has a majority. The number of services throughout the year was 24,533, in which the index of departures and arrivals on time was improved by eight tenths.
The high season for what was the first high-speed line outside of Spain for Renfe occurred during the periods of Ramadan and Haj (major pilgrimage), in which it developed special programs to meet the high demand generated by the pilgrimages. The highest number of monthly reservations occurred in April, with 825,000, while the frequency record occurred on June 25, coinciding with the aforementioned Hach, with 131 services in one day.
The line has 1,300 employees, including the first 34 female machinists in Saudi. Renfe received 28,000 applications in that process undertaken in January of last year.
