RENIEC is the abbreviation of the country’s National Registry of Identification and Civil Status. It is a public institution in charge of keeping the registry of people and their respective identity documents in Peruvian territory. Reniec del Perú was created in 1994 with the objective of modernizing the civil registry and facilitating the identification of people in the country. Currently, RENIEC is responsible for the issuance and renewal of the National Identity Document (DNI), which is the official identification of Peruvian citizens.

The DNI is a personal and non-transferable document that is used to identify a person in Peruvian territory. The document contains important information, such as the full name, date and place of birth, identification number, home address and photograph of the holder. In addition, the DNI also serves as a voting document in national, regional and municipal elections in Peru.

RENIEC is also responsible for keeping the registry of marriages, divorces and deaths in Peru. Marriage registration is important because it serves to legalize unions between couples and guarantee their rights and obligations. Divorce registration, on the other hand, allows couples to legally dissolve their marriage and obtain legal recognition of their separation. The death registry, for its part, is essential to keep an updated record of the population and grant rights and benefits to the relatives of the deceased.

RENIEC also has an important role in the country’s security. The institution works together with the National Police of Peru and other authorities to guarantee the identification of people who may represent a risk to national security. In addition, RENIEC also collaborates in the fight against corruption and organized crime through the registration and control of companies and organizations in the country.
