(Rennes, February 12, 2026) — A student was injured after his car was struck from behind by a vehicle that fled the scene on the Rennes ring road Monday afternoon, prompting a police investigation and a public appeal for witnesses.
The incident occurred around 4:45 PM on the Saint-Grégoire – Chantepie axis, a heavily trafficked section of the ring road near the Angers Gate, according to a statement from Angélique, the student’s mother. Her son, a student whose name has been changed to Maxime to protect his privacy, was driving home from school when a blue BMW Series 1 collided with the rear of his Citroën before speeding away.
- A hit-and-run collision occurred on the Rennes ring road Monday afternoon.
- The driver of a blue BMW Series 1 fled the scene after striking a student’s vehicle.
- Police are requesting assistance from the public to identify the vehicle and driver.
- The student sustained whiplash and has been prescribed three days of incapacity for work.
“The shock was violent,” Angélique said. “No one stopped to help him.” Maxime was able to pull over and contacted the police after experiencing a migraine and dizziness, but she stated that emergency medical services initially “refused to move.” He subsequently filed a complaint online and sought medical attention at SOS Doctors, where he received a medical certificate and was diagnosed with whiplash, Angélique added.
Maxime is currently wearing a neck brace and has been prescribed three days of incapacity for work (ITT), according to his mother. His car sustained significant damage, with the rear smashed and the trunk crushed, rendering it undrivable.
Police are seeking information about the incident and have asked anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward. Angélique and Maxime have also requested that authorities review footage from video surveillance cameras along the ring road, a request that requires approval from the public prosecutor.
“At the time, he didn’t have the reflex to note the plate registration,” Angélique said. “But we know it is a BMW Blue series 1.” She added, “My son has a good head on his shoulders, he is someone who knows his responsibilities. He doesn’t understand this kind of behavior.”
While the family has comprehensive insurance to cover the repairs, Angélique emphasized that the principle of the matter is paramount. “It is above all a question of principle,” she said. “Especially since the car did not hesitate at all to flee and, given the traffic, put the lives of others in danger to flee quickly.”
Why It Matters
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of hit-and-run collisions, which pose a significant risk to public safety. The driver’s decision to flee the scene not only left a student injured but also potentially endangered other motorists on a busy stretch of highway. The Rennes police department’s appeal for witnesses underscores the importance of community involvement in ensuring accountability and preventing similar incidents in the future.
