Thu, 11:20·Hardware·bkIn the past few months, the topic of “artificial intelligence” has played a major role in media reporting, which is undoubtedly due to some notable progress in this field. AI has also long since found its way into consumer electronics: Samsung recently emphasized the importance of relevant functions for the manufacturer’s most recently released top smartphones. Apple also takes AI seriously and, for example, has been equipping the iPhone’s SoC with a Neural Engine since the A11 chip in the iPhone 8 and X. This features computing cores specialized in machine learning and AI – and could undergo a massive upgrade in the coming chip generation.

Neural Engine: 32 cores for A-chips?
According to a report by Economic Daily News, the M4 chip for the Mac and the A18 for the iPhone 16 have significantly more AI computing cores. While the Neural Engine of the iPhone 8 and X was still content with two cores, Cupertino provided this component with eight cores in the following two generations. Since the iPhone 12, the processor has access to 16 cores. Regardless of the sheer number of cores, Apple continually improved performance. For example, the Neural Engine of the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro is twice as fast as its predecessor in the iPhone 14 Pro. Since Apple Silicon, AI tasks on the Mac have benefited from the Neural Engine. It always includes 16 cores, the only exceptions can be found in the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, where an M1 Ultra or M2 Ultra with a 32-core neural engine may be used.

iOS 18 with many AI functions
According to the report, Apple’s plans entail increased investments in ordering chips from TSMC. The order volume for processors manufactured using the 3-nanometer process will probably increase by 50 percent. Industry experts like Mark Gurman believe that iOS 18 is a huge step forward in terms of AI. Apple could support this development with suitable hardware in the form of a more powerful Neural Engine – and reserve some particularly notable AI features for the upcoming iPhone.
