Republicans criticized the attorney general Merrick Garland for elevating attorney David Weiss, who has been investigating President Joe Biden’s son, to special counsel status, Hunter Biden.

Mr Garland advertisement on August 11 that Mr. Weiss, attorney for the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, has been appointed as special counsel, three days after Mr. Weiss, who was appointed under President Donald Trump, will request the designation.

The move comes after two IRS whistleblowers alleged that the DOJ has restricted Mr. Weiss from filing certain charges against Hunter Biden. They also allege political meddling in the DOJ’s investigation into the president’s son.

Mr. Weiss will act as special counsel “for the aforementioned and described ongoing investigation and prosecutions in the United States against Robert Hunter Biden, as well as any other matters that arise or may arise from that investigation,” the department said in a statement. .

Congressmen from the Republican Party criticized the move.

This move by Attorney General Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to try to cover up for the Biden family, in light of mounting evidence from the House Oversight Committee about President Joe Biden’s role in the plans for his family from selling millions of dollars of “the brand” to foreign nationals,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said in a statement.

Mr. Comer vowed that his committee, along with the House Judiciary Committee, “will root out misconduct in the Department of Justice and hold accountable bad actors who weaponize law enforcement powers.”

The House Judiciary Committee called Garland’s decision a cover-up.

“David Weiss cannot be trusted, and this is nothing more than a new way to cover up the corruption of the Biden family,” Russell Dye, spokesman for committee chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), told The Epoch Times.

“Weiss has already signed a plea deal with such horrible and unfair favoritism that a federal judge threw it out.”

According to a DOJ briefing dated August 11, the agreement has been cancelled. Therefore, the matter will go to trial. Mr. Biden had agreed to plead guilty to tax evasion and a gun possession charge, the latter of which was to be diverted pending Hunter Biden completing an anti-drug program.

The plea agreement fell apart during a contentious hearing in July, when U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika expressed her “concern” that the diversion agreement linked tax offenses to the adjudication of felony charges of weapons, calling it “atypical” and “unprecedented.”

Two IRS whistleblowers have also surfaced in recent months. claiming political meddling in the DOJ’s investigation into Mr. Biden’s tax affairs, further stoking GOP criticism of the investigation.

On Friday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) also dismissed the move as a positive.

“This action by the Biden Justice Department cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or to cover up the corruption of the Biden family. If Weiss negotiated the deal with favoritism that failed to pass, how can he be trusted as Special Counsel?” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Two thoughts: Weiss was appointed by Trump in 2017, which is good. 2nd Attorney General Merrick Garland’s comments on the appointment of Weiss demonstrated that the Department’s “commitment to INDEPENDENCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY ON SENSITIVE ISSUES” is STUNNING and the height of HYPOCRISY on the part of the Biden Administration!”, said Rep. Ralph Norman (RS.C.) in a text message to The Epoch Times.

“Davis Weiss cannot be trusted. He’s already dealt favoritism to Hunter Biden once. What makes you think he won’t do it again?” posted Texas Republican Rep. Troy Nehls on X.

“Special counsel Hunter Biden is two years late, and David Weiss has just signed a favoritism agreement to sweep the Biden family misdeeds under the rug. This is just another tactic to delay the prosecution of the Biden crime family.” posted Rep. John Rose (R-Tenn.) in X.

“Attorney General Merrick Garland has just appointed David Weiss Special Counsel to “investigate” Hunter Biden. Weiss—who orchestrated the plea deal with favoritism from Hunter—has ZERO credibility. This is nothing more than an attempt to hide the corruption of the Biden Crime Family.” posted Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) at X.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) expressed hope now that Mr. Weiss is special counsel.

“House Republicans are holding the corrupt Biden family and administration accountable and putting relentless pressure on them, leading to this long overdue announcement.” posted Donalds on X. “I hope Weiss doesn’t continue to slow down the investigations into the president’s son. We need accountability.”
