Digital Foundry Review: iPhone 15 Pro’s Gaming Performance Falls Short of Expectations

Digital Foundry recently released a review of the iPhone 15 Pro version of “Castle 4: Remastered” on Youtube, and the verdict is in: the gaming experience on the new iPhone might not be as impressive as Apple claims.

The review pointed out that the iPhone 15 Pro aims to replicate the PS4 version of the game, but it falls short of fully achieving this goal. While suitable for mobile play, the review suggests that describing it as a “3A-level experience” might be excessive.

Apple has equipped the iPhone 15 Pro with the industry’s first 3nm process chip, significantly enhancing GPU performance and supporting hardware acceleration, ray tracing, and other technologies. According to information from Apple’s official website, the A17 Pro’s graphics processor is up to 70% faster than the iPhone 12 Pro.

However, it seems that the ability to run these games may come at a cost, with the review suggesting that the iPhone 15 may be lowering the resolution of the games to achieve this performance.

The review noted that while the iPhone version closely resembles the PS4 version, there are significant reductions in visual effects. The iPhone version uses lower-resolution textures in many scenes, making the entire game world appear somewhat blurry, especially during large movements.

Additionally, the game experienced long-term freezes and performance issues, and in some cases could not maintain a stable 30 frames. The shadow effect of the iPhone version was also found to be unsatisfactory and appeared rough.

It is speculated that the MetalFX machine learning technology used to increase the resolution to 720p may be responsible for the blurriness during movement and the performance issues.

Apple has been making efforts to improve its gaming performance, including the development of Metal to allow for the transplantation of gaming masterpieces. But whether game manufacturers are willing to launch corresponding versions for Mac or iPhone remains uncertain.

The review suggests that while the iPhone 15 Pro’s GPU performance may reach the level of a mid-range gaming PC, the overall gaming experience falls short of expectations. As Apple continues its efforts to win over gamers, it remains to be seen if the company can overcome these challenges.
