Monumental mess at OpenAI. More than 500 employees of the startup resignation (IA) have signed a letter in which they demand the dimision of its board of directors for having fired its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, last Friday.

The dismissal of who until now had been the visible face behind ChatGPT caught the technology sector by surprise, but also the company’s workers and investors, who were not informed of a controversial decision both in form and substance. Already then, part of the staff described Altman’s expulsion as a “blow.”

After a chaotic weekend, up to 505 of OpenAI’s 700 staff members have decided to riot and demand the resignation of the board of directors. If they do not do so, they say, they will leave the company to join the new division of IA advanced of Microsoft which Altman will captain. This team also includes Greg Brockmanco-founder of OpenAI who resigned as president of the company on Friday in a sign of solidarity with his colleague.

“Your actions have made it clear that I am incapable of overseeing OpenAI. We cannot work for or with people who lack competence, judgment, and care for our mission and our employees,” the letter reads.

Sutskever apologizes

Among the half a thousand employees who sign this clear threat, the technology director stands out Mira MuratiCOO Brad Lightcap and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Ironically, Altman’s dismissal could be related to his disagreements with Sutskever, also a co-founder of the company and a supporter of slowing down the development of AI to ensure its safety. Sutskever is the one who informed Altman on Friday that he was being fired via video call.

Today, after this whole soap opera, he has asked for forgiveness for his actions. “I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we have built together and will do everything I can to reunite the company,” he explained in a post on X, the network social network formerly known as Twitter
