Ricardo ‘Gato’ Pérez faces a new challenge in his career as a leader. The former forward was named the new sports director of Millonarios, replacing Ricardo ‘Pitirri’ Salazar, who died on April 18 in Bogotá. In a chat with Caracol Deportes, he expressed his happiness at arriving at the capital club and praised the past management, calling it “successful and winning.”

In addition, the new blue sports director told details about his departure from Dimayor and referred to the refereeing controversies that have arisen in the BetPlay 2024-l League. “You know that referees do like soccer players, they go out on the field to give their best”he pointed.

What led you to make the decision?: “You just said part of the answer, it is a winning project that has recently borne fruit. In advance I want to give my condolences for the loss of ‘Pitirri’ to his family and the club. I hope to do the same or better than ‘Pitirri’ in the clubs he was in.”

What type of players will you look for for Millonarios?: “Everything really happened quite quickly, we haven’t had the time to hold that joint meeting or to hand myself over to the position to listen to what the directives, the executive committee and the coaching staff have to tell me. It would be wrong to answer the question before having that meeting. It is a big responsibility, it is a team that has won in recent years although it has had setbacks, like this season that has not been easy or the last matches that have not been favorable.”

His time as a player in Millonarios: “When I played, I had hard moments, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t done with all the love in the world. Those difficult times, especially in the economic part, are behind us. In the sporting part, there have been triumphs that have made all the fans happy. I find another club, which I hope to know more about since I don’t know the inside, I’m sure it will be very easy because the affection is mutual, from the boys, from the group, from the teacher, from the board. I hope to fit into the rhythm to make the best decisions.”

His management at Dimayor: “At first we started playing often, we practically played every day. With President Fernando we said ‘let’s stop because we are wrong.’ We corrected it in time, but there was understandable annoyance from some presidents. From date 11 to now it was calmer with more tranquility for the Colombian teams that play in international cups and those that compete in the previous instance of the BetPlay Cup.”

The problems with arbitration: “It is a critical issue for everyone. Be it in the position we are in, playing, in the leadership part. We all have to contribute to make it better, one knows that the referees do like the soccer player, they go out on the field to give their best. In the end it becomes like a pressure cooker, you never want to make mistakes, but this is human beings. Telling you that they are not going to make mistakes is a lie, but we have to rely on technology and training. We cannot ignore bad things, but no one wants to do things out of evil. We must improve and correct, without a doubt.”

Millionaire Goals: “I was aware that I had to prepare myself well to do it in the best way when I arrived. The last 16 years have shaped me to be able to face a challenge, everything happens for a reason, for the better. Today I have the nice opportunity to return and I will do everything in my power to help Millonarios. Surely there are things to grow and ratify. We have to get back on track so that the team continues on the path it was on. I want to immerse myself in everything that the club has to offer, it’s time to be inside to get to know it more.”
