Riga Police Intensify Ice Safety Monitoring as Temperatures Drop

Riga residents are urged to exercise extreme caution on frozen waterways as the Riga Municipal Police increase daily monitoring of ice thickness and enforce safety regulations. The heightened vigilance comes as temperatures remain low across the region, creating potentially hazardous conditions for those engaging in winter recreation.

The Riga Municipal Police are dedicating significant resources to ensuring public safety on the city’s bodies of water. According to a representative of the Riga Municipal Police Water Safety Administration, officers are walking “several dozen kilometres a day,” a physically demanding task crucial for assessing ice conditions. The focus is on areas most frequented by residents, prioritizing preventative measures to avoid accidents.

Assessing Ice Safety: More Than Just Thickness

Determining whether ice is safe to walk on is not simply a matter of measuring its depth. A senior official explained that safety depends on a variety of factors specific to each body of water, including under-ice currents and overall water conditions. “It depends on the body of water itself, as there are many other criteria to be assessed,” the official stated during an interview with Latvian Radio on February 4th.

Specifically, authorities are warning residents to avoid crossing the Daugava River under bridges. “Under bridges, the current breaks up the ice layer, and there is no guarantee that the ice will be thick enough,” the official cautioned. This is a particularly dangerous area due to the concentrated flow of water and the resulting instability of the ice.

Enforcement and Prevention

The primary goal of the Riga Municipal Police is to prevent individuals from falling through the ice. While officers will initiate administrative proceedings against anyone refusing to leave prohibited areas, the emphasis remains on proactive prevention. “Our primary duty is to ensure that people do not fall through the ice,” a police representative affirmed.

Residents are strongly encouraged to adhere to all safety requirements and utilize only designated areas for ice recreation. Up-to-date information on permitted zones is available on a specially created ice map accessible on both the Riga City Council and municipal police websites.
