The mayor of Rio, Carlo Caiado (PSD)

The president of the Rio de Janeiro City Council, councilor Carlo Caiado (PSD), announced this Saturday (18) that he will file a bill determining authorization for the public to bring bottles of water to shows and cultural events and sports in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

The announcement comes after the death of student Ana Benevides,

23 years old, during singer Taylor Swift’s first show on Brazilian soil, last Friday (17), at the Engenhão stadium, in the north of the city. The young woman died due to the intense heat in the city.

According to the councilor, the project will also oblige event organizers to provide hydration points and cooling areas. “It is unacceptable for a young woman to lose her life due to the lack of structure at an event of this size, in the midst of one of the biggest heat waves ever recorded. I express my solidarity with Ana’s family and friends”, declared the parliamentarian.

According to the text of the project that will be presented, the public will be able to enter event spaces with sealed and transparent mineral water bottles. Hydration points must be made available at a rate of one for every 200 people present. The rule will apply whenever the recorded temperature is equal to or greater than 30 degrees and during summer.

“We will seek a union of all councilors to approve this measure as soon as possible, given the forecast of one of the hottest summers in recent times in Rio,” said Caiado.

Taylor Swift paused show to give fans water: ‘They really need it’

T4F, organizer of Taylor Swift’s concert, said it will set up more free water distribution points during the second day of “The Eras Tour” in Rio, on Saturday night.

In a statement, the company also stated that it will allow sealed cups and food to enter Engenhão, and that the medical care structure will be reinforced.

According to the company, water glasses must be sealed due to “safety recommendations” and “the ban on water bottles entering stadiums is a requirement made by public bodies.” T4F also stated that the sale of drinks and food is a “status management responsibility”.

The change in the company’s stance comes after pressure from fans, who even organized a petition for more access to water, in addition to the Minister of Justice, Flavio Dino, informing that he will sign a rule obliging the distribution of drinking water and the Allowing bottles to enter shows.
