Rivian is transforming its R1S, R1T, and R2 electric vehicles into Ghostbusters-themed machines complete with Ecto-1 lighting, audio, and interactive elements through Nov. 2, according to reports from CNET.
Every October, Rivian owners can activate Halloween Mode to change exterior lights, sounds, and infotainment graphics for the season. This year’s software update, developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures, pushes that seasonal tradition much further.
Inside the Ecto-1 Software Package
Owners activate the transformation through a “Ghostbusters” app that syncs interior and exterior effects with the iconic film car. A prompt on the driver display asks whether they want to hunt some ghosts,
launching the mode.
Second-generation R1 and R2 models receive additional themes like Proton Pack and Slimer. R1 Gen 1 owners receive the Ecto-1 theme only.
Interactive Lights, Sounds, and Mobile Remotes
Each theme pairs a distinct exterior LED sequence with a matching audio track. The vehicle can also be programmed to activate a random display of lights and sounds when motion is detected nearby, providing a surprising experience for those passing by.
Inside, dashboard and rear displays transform to match Ecto-1 control panels, playing a version of Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” theme song. Rivian mobile and smartwatch apps update to mirror vehicle controls, allowing owners to activate Ecto-1’s siren and flashing lights remotely.
Infotainment Secrets and Arcade Games
The update features hidden clues in the infotainment system that trigger animations and audio when tapped. The Rivian Assistant voice system also adopts a seasonal tone, responding to commands with light shows and scavenger hunt clues.

A parked-only arcade game, Mallow Mash, lets players pop mini Stay Puft Marshmallow Men. The touchscreen theme remains active while driving if enabled beforehand, though most features require the vehicle to be in park.
Building the Physical Ecto-R1
Beyond software, Rivian built a physical Ecto-R1—a full-size R1S inspired by the original Ecto-1. The vehicle sports white paint, red graphics running the length of the chassis, and 22-inch Aero wheels.
A custom roof frame loads the vehicle with screen-accurate sirens, spotlights, a radar dish, and side tanks, complemented by restored vintage emergency lights. The vehicle also features the No-Ghost logo on its hood and front doors.
Owners need updated software and the Rivian mobile app to access the features. The update is available now, with the Ecto-R1 displays open for in-person viewing at specified locations.
