It is becoming increasingly common worldwide for people to become ill from bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. Antibiotics no longer work. “In the Netherlands, that problem is less serious than in many other countries. However, it remains important for the Netherlands to stay sharp,” says the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.
During the corona pandemic in 2020 and last year, fewer people went to the doctor. GPs prescribed 10 percent less antibiotics during this period. The health institute also notes that there have been fewer outbreaks of drug-resistant bacteria in hospitals and nursing homes since the start of the pandemic.
