RN deputies, “elected like the others” in the eyes of the French

by time news
National Rally deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy with the president of the RN group, Marine Le Pen, at the National Assembly, November 21, 2022.

Since the election of 89 deputies to the National Assembly, the National Rally (RN) has made the Palais-Bourbon the heart of its standardization enterprise. With some success, if we are to believe the results of the Kantar Public-Epoka study for The world and Franceinfo, carried out face to face, between November 29 and December 6, with 1,014 people, chosen according to the quota method.

The impact of this strategy on the political future of the party must however be put into perspective, as parliamentary news remains little followed by the French. Nearly a third of those polled believe they do not “not knowing enough to judge”. But, among those who speak out, three-quarters consider that these 89 elected officials are “deputies like the others”which are “present and involved”. And an equivalent proportion judge that they “respect the rules of the Assembly”.

This is the whole meaning of the strategy of the far right at the Palais-Bourbon: to prove that the party is part of the parliamentary game, would be the guarantor of the institutions in the event of accession to power, and would be just as serious than the other parties that have already exercised power.

In a National Assembly with a relative majority, the July parliamentary session played a major role in this positive image. The nature of the texts, relating to urgent measures to support purchasing power, and the exceptional aspect of the political situation, with a government forced to rely on the opposition, improved the image of the institution and the interest it aroused. “The RN deputies, without distinguishing themselves there, accompanied this effect”, notes Emmanuel Rivière, director of international studies at Kantar Public. The analyst is not convinced, however, by the impact of the “tie strategy”, consisting of RN deputies presenting well, or the different tactical choices of Marine Le Pen in the National Assembly: “It is more the lack of distinction than specific events that contribute to this respectable image. »

A fading “red line”

A fact seems not to have escaped the French: the incident caused by the xenophobic cry of the deputy RN of Gironde Grégoire de Fournas (“Let him return to Africa!” »), pronounced during a session of questions to the government, while a deputy of African origin, Carlos Martens Bilongo (Val-d’Oise, Nupes), worried about the fate of the boat Ocean-Vikingfill in migrants.

Among the French people who vote in this poll, which took place a month after the temporary exclusion of Grégoire de Fournas, a majority considers that the RN deputies “make xenophobic or racist remarks” et “be aggressive”. This judgment on the aggressive or xenophobic remarks made by Marine Le Pen’s group is shared both on the right and on the left. Similarly, the positive assessment of his presence and his involvement is expressed by supporters of the left (52%) and Renaissance (54%).
