Durant Powers Rockets to Victory, Ends Pistons’ Winning Streak

The Houston Rockets snapped the Detroit Pistons’ four-game winning streak with a decisive 111-104 victory on Friday night, fueled by a dominant performance from Kevin Durant.
The Rockets, who had previously struggled on the road, delivered a strong showing, overcoming a tied score at halftime to secure the win. Durant, averaging a remarkable 30.6 points in 32 career games against Detroit – his highest against any opponent – led all scorers with 32 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of play without committing a single turnover.
Rockets Surge in the Third Quarter
Houston’s victory was largely built on a commanding third quarter, where they outscored Detroit 34-20. This surge transformed a closely contested game into an 86-72 lead for the Rockets. Durant and Reed Shepherd were instrumental during this period, combining for 18 points on an efficient 7-for-8 shooting.
“The team really locked in defensively in the third,” a senior analyst noted. “They forced Detroit into tough shots and capitalized on their opportunities on offense.”
Flagrant Foul Shifts Momentum
Early in the fourth quarter, the game saw a pivotal moment when Detroit attempted to close the gap. After a missed shot by Cade Cunningham, Jae’Sean Tate was assessed a flagrant foul for undercutting Ron Holland II while pursuing the rebound. Holland capitalized, sinking both free throws, and Jalen Duren followed with a dunk off a lob pass from Cunningham, bringing the Pistons within striking distance at 87-80.
However, the Pistons’ momentum was short-lived. A subsequent Rockets turnover was answered by a three-point play from Isaiah Stewart, but Detroit was unable to fully recover.
Houston Closes Out the Game
A clutch 3-pointer from Josh Okogie extended Houston’s lead to 101-93 with 5:19 remaining, and a layup by Shepherd with 2:04 left pushed the advantage back into double digits, effectively sealing the victory for the Rockets.
While Durant finished with 18 points in the first half, Detroit initially maintained a competitive edge by dominating the paint, outscoring Houston 36-24 in that area and entering halftime tied at 52. However, Houston’s defensive adjustments in the third quarter, limiting Cunningham and Duncan Robinson to just two shot attempts in the first eight minutes, proved to be the turning point. The Rockets shot 68.4% (13-19) in the period, compared to Detroit’s 36.4% (8-22).
Alperen Sengun contributed 19 points and Amen Thompson added 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists for Houston, who have now won four of their last five games. Jalen Duren led Detroit with 18 points and seven rebounds, but the Pistons’ other four starters combined for a mere 37 points on 13-of-35 shooting (37.1%).
Looking Ahead
The Rockets will next host the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. The Pistons, meanwhile, will return home to face the Sacramento Kings on Sunday afternoon.
