RSV Outbreak: Elderly People Must Be Careful

In a recent Facebook post, Dr. Manoon Leechawengwong, a specialist in respiratory diseases and intensive care patients, has raised an urgent warning for elderly individuals to be cautious about the RSV virus. This virus has been spreading rapidly during this period and can lead to bronchitis-pneumonia, especially in older individuals with congenital diseases.

Dr. Manoon highlighted the case of a 74-year-old female patient who experienced symptoms such as fever, cough, cloudy white sputum, and fatigue for five days. The patient had asthma and two grandchildren aged 4 and 1 living in the same house. Both grandchildren had cold and cough symptoms, but their conditions improved. After several tests, it was confirmed that the patient had been infected with the RSV virus.

Upon examination, the patient had no fever, and her oxygen level was measured at 95%. Lung auscultation revealed screeching sounds on both sides, and a lung x-ray showed white patches on the lower right lung. The patient was diagnosed with bronchitis and pneumonia caused by RSV and was prescribed steroids, bronchodilators, and antibiotics to be taken and sprayed at home for one week. Follow-up appointments for two weeks showed significant improvement with no fever, cough, or fatigue. Lung auscultation and x-rays appeared normal.

The RSV virus has recently caused an outbreak in young children under 5 years of age, although most of them recover quickly. It is important to note that there is no cure for RSV infection, and treatment is based on managing symptoms. However, elderly individuals and those with chronic diseases are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from RSV. In some cases, hospitalization may be required due to difficulty in breathing, a blocked airway, and wheezing noises, similar to the patient mentioned earlier.

Fortunately, there is some hope on the horizon. Pfizer and GSK are currently working on a new vaccine against RSV specifically for people aged 60 years and older, which is expected to be available in the near future.

As the RSV virus continues to spread, it is crucial for elderly individuals and those with chronic diseases to take extra precautions, especially if they have young children in their household. By implementing appropriate safety measures and staying informed, we can reduce the risk of severe illness caused by this virus. Thank you to Dr. Manoon Leechawengwong for providing this important information and raising awareness about the RSV outbreak.]
