Israel has refused to support a United States Security Council resolution calling on Russia to invade Russia – despite a request from President Joe Biden. As “bridesmaids”, that is – will sign the resolution and express support for it even without voting for it.
Israel dragged its feet and gave no clear answer to the Americans until Friday midnight when the Security Council debate began. In contrast to Israel, more than 80 countries that are not members of the UN Security Council expressed support for the US resolution. In the vote, 11 members of the Security Council voted in favor of condemning Russia. Three countries – China, India and the UAE abstained. The decision.
Next week, the UN General Assembly is expected to vote on a similar condemnation decision. At the UN General Assembly, Russia has no veto and therefore the condemnation proposal is expected to pass by a large majority. It is estimated that Israel will have no choice but to vote in favor of the decision when it comes to a vote at the UN General Assembly.
A Foreign Ministry official told Walla! “Israel has decided not to join the list of countries sitting in the Security Council decision. Israel is not a member of the Security Council and this is a decision that will not pass in any case because of the Russian veto. Israel’s position on the conflict in Ukraine is clear and will be reflected in the UN arena. We have made it clear to the Allies that we oppose the Russian move as expressed in the Foreign Minister’s remarks and we have a set of constraints that they are well aware of. “
