Drone Strike on Akhtyrka Residential Building Injures Seven Civilians in Sumy Region
A Russian drone attack on the city of Akhtyrka in the Sumy region of Ukraine on the night of December 8th injured seven civilians and caused significant damage to a nine-story residential building. The strike underscores the continued threat to civilian populations amidst the ongoing conflict.
Civilian Casualties and Damage Assessment
According to initial reports from the Head of the Sumy Military Administration, Oleg Grigorov, the attack involved three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). “Russia attacked the Akhtyrsk community with three attack UAVs this night. They hit a high-rise building. There are casualties: five civilians are preliminary in the hospital, doctors are providing the necessary assistance,” Grigorov stated.
The number of casualties was later revised upwards to seven, with two individuals hospitalized and five receiving outpatient treatment following the incident. A senior official confirmed that the residential building sustained extensive damage, forcing some residents to seek shelter in basements while others were evacuated from affected floors. A headquarters has been established to coordinate the response and provide assistance to those impacted, including access to designated “Points of Indestructibility” for residents.
Emergency Response and Fire Suppression
The State Emergency Service reported that multiple UAVs simultaneously struck the roof and wall of the building, igniting a fire that spread across apartments from the second to the fifth floors. Emergency responders swiftly evacuated 35 residents, and an additional seven citizens, including one child, were assisted from the damaged premises.
“In the city of Akhtyrka, several Russian attack UAVs simultaneously hit the roof and wall of a multi-storey residential building. A fire broke out in apartments from the second to fifth floor,” the State Emergency Service reported at 06:03 local time.
