The Russian military is attacking power systems across Ukraine with dozens of missiles and drones. “The whole world has no right to give Nazism another chance,” says the Ukrainian president, referring to Russia.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia again attacked the electricity supply in Ukraine in night airstrikes. Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko spoke early Wednesday on the Telegram messaging service about “another massive attack” on the energy industry. More than 50 missiles and 20 drones were used. The Ukrainian Air Force said 39 out of 55 missiles and 20 out of 21 drones were shot down.
The goal was electricity generation and transmission facilities in Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia regions. With the exception of Zaporizhzhia, all other regions are far from the front in eastern and southeastern Ukraine. According to authorities, various systems were damaged. The country’s largest private electricity supplier DTEK announced that there was serious damage to three thermal power plants. Electricity grid operator Ukrenergo reported damage to a plant in central Ukraine.
The Minister of Energy asks people to save electricity
Technicians were already working to repair the damage. The exact size is still being determined. “The enemy wants to take away our ability to generate and transmit electricity in sufficient quantities,” the minister wrote. He asked the population to save electricity, which would contribute to victory.
The massive attack took place on Remembrance and Reconciliation Day to honor the victims of the Second World War. “The whole world must clearly understand who is who. The whole world has no right to give Nazism another chance,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
Attacks also on Kyiv
The night air alert began in large parts of Ukraine as Russian combat drones approached. Rockets were used there. According to the Air Force of Ukraine, one of them targeted Kiev. The capital’s military command later said all incoming objects had been intercepted. In the suburb of Brovary, an unspecified civil infrastructure facility caught fire, Mayor Ihor Saposchko said. A man and a woman were injured.
According to the Air Force, a Kinschal hypersonic missile was fired into western Ukraine. In its war of aggression, which has been going on for more than two years, Russia has been placing targets in the hinterland of Ukraine almost every night. Moscow wants not only to achieve military goals, but also to shut down Ukraine’s energy system. Even civilian targets are hit several times.
