London – A recent immersive installation by Japanese audiovisual artist Ryoji Ikeda opened at 180 Studios in London on October 15, 2025, offering visitors a unique sensory experience charting the vastness of data in the natural world. data-cosm [n°1], commissioned by 180 Studios, transforms complex datasets into a large-scale audiovisual environment, exploring the intersection of art and physics. Tickets for the exhibition are currently available through the 180 Studios website.
The installation invites audiences to lie down and look up at a massive LED screen set into the ceiling, surrounded by Ikeda’s meticulously crafted soundscapes. This unconventional viewing position is central to the experience, designed to envelop visitors in a total sensory environment. data-cosm [n°1] aims to visualize the full spectrum of data, ranging from the incredibly small scale of particle physics to the immense scale of astrophysics, a concept previously explored in Ikeda’s acclaimed data-verse project.
Ikeda, described as Japan’s leading composer and visual artist, is known for his function that focuses on the fundamental characteristics of sound and visuals, utilizing mathematical precision and aesthetics. His immersive installations and performances orchestrate sound, visuals, materials, and mathematical concepts to create unique experiences. According to 180 Studios, data-cosm [n°1] functions as “a giant microscope, a scientific apparatus, a clinical device, a monitoring system, and a window to an infinitely vast space.”
A History of Collaboration
This installation marks a continuation of a long-standing relationship between 180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory, beginning with the 2015 premiere of Ikeda’s supersymmetry at Brewer Street Car Park in London. In 2021, 180 Studios hosted the largest exhibition of Ikeda’s work to date, showcasing a range of his large-scale installations and data-driven projects. The collaboration highlights a commitment to presenting innovative and challenging art experiences.

Experiencing the Cosmos Through Data
Visitors to data-cosm [n°1] can expect an experience that transcends traditional art viewing. The installation is designed to be physically and psychologically affecting, prompting a sense of immersion and altered perception. One reviewer described the experience as feeling “like stepping inside a supercomputer’s dream,” noting the overwhelming yet deliberate nature of the sensory input. The work aims to collapse the boundaries between scales, allowing viewers to simultaneously contemplate the microscopic and the macroscopic.
data-cosm [n°1] will be on display at 180 Studios, located at 6 Surrey Street, London, WC2R 2ND, from October 15 to December 21, 2025. The exhibition is open from 12pm to 7pm, Wednesday through Sunday, with the last entry at 7pm. Those interested in experiencing this unique intersection of art, science, and technology are encouraged to secure tickets in advance through the 180 Studios website.
As the exhibition nears its close in December, 180 Studios is expected to announce its upcoming program of events and installations. Further details will be available on their website. The continued exploration of immersive and data-driven art promises to push the boundaries of artistic expression and audience engagement.
