Sales of new cars in Russia fell by 58.8% last year

At the end of 2022, sales of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) in Russia amounted to 687,370 units, which is 58.8% less than in 2021, according to the website of the Association of European Businesses (AEB).

At the same time, sales in December decreased by 50.2% compared to December 2021, to 64,072 vehicles.

The domestic AvtoVAZ became the sales leader at the end of the year, having sold 188,645 Lada cars since the beginning of the year, which is 46% lower than last year. In December, 24,009 Lada cars were sold, which is 20% less than in December 2021. This is the maximum result of the automaker since the beginning of the year.

According to the results of the year, sales of Chinese automakers Cherryexeed, which sold 13,686 vehicles (+264%), Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFM, 1666 vehicles, +213%), as well as the Japanese truck manufacturer Hino (164 vehicles, +204%), grew the most. %).

Sales fell the most at Lexus (1,857 vehicles vs. 19,362 in 2021). Volvo also showed a significant drop, which in 2022 was able to sell 1707 cars (last year 9088 cars were sold, the fall was 81%). Sales of Land Rover decreased by 82% – 1682 against 6388 in 2021, sales of Toyota, Skoda, Volkswagen, BMW fell by 80%.

On January 10, Vitaly Osipov, sales director of the domestic auto concern AvtoVAZ, announced that the share of Lada in the domestic market in 2022 increased by 6.9 percentage points to 27.9%. At the same time, in the autumn months, the market share reached 40%, he stressed.

Earlier, Avtostat, with reference to the data of the Industrial Consulting Passport (PPK), published a rating of the most popular cars in Russia in 2022. The first place was taken by Lada Granta, which was bought by almost 88,000 people. The top three also included Lada Vesta and Kia Rio, which sold 32,700 and 23,900 times, respectively.

Against the backdrop of the start of a special operation in Ukraine, some foreign car manufacturers announced the cessation of supplies to Russia, some companies also suspended the work of factories in the country. In particular, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Infiniti, Hyundai, Nissan, Mazda, Toyota and others left the Russian market. Later, the Ministry of Industry and Trade included a number of automotive brands in the list of goods for parallel import, including BMW, Toyota, Land Rover, Jaguar and Rolls Royce.
