Salmon ‘Amish Store’ Destroyed by Fire: Cause Revealed

by ethan.brook News Editor

SALMON, Idaho — A beloved country market known locally as “the Amish store” was destroyed by fire Saturday evening, leaving the small community of Salmon reeling. Officials have determined the blaze at Baker Country Market, a popular stop for residents and travelers alike, was sparked by embers from a nearby debris burn.

The market, owned and operated by the Paul Miller family since 2015, was a fixture in Lemhi County, known for its Amish-style goods including fresh-baked breads, homemade butter, and a variety of specialty groceries. The loss is estimated at $1.2 million, according to Mike Warner, chief of the Lemhi County Fire Protection District.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, February 21, on Idaho Highway 28, approximately nine miles east of Salmon. Despite arriving within 10 minutes, Warner said the structure was already heavily engulfed in flames. The building ultimately collapsed while crews were still on scene.

Cause of the Fire: A Spreading Ember

The investigation revealed the fire originated when embers from a debris burn conducted by the business owners ignited a stack of wooden pallets near the market. Warner explained that wind conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. “The business owners were burning some old boxes and rubbish not far from the store,” he said. “The wind came up, blowing a chunk of hot embers that landed on the pallets, causing the fire spread to the building.”

A Community Landmark Lost

The Baker Country Market had turn into a well-known destination since opening its doors in 2015. The store served not only the local Amish community, but also drew visitors from across the region. The loss is being felt deeply by those who frequented the market.

“This fire is a shock to a lot of people,” Warner said. “The store was very well-liked. It was a great place, and now it’s gone.”

The Amish community in Lemhi County, established in 2012, represents the westernmost Amish settlement in the United States and the only one in Idaho, according to Amish America. The Baker Country Market was often seen as a key representation of this community.

Response and Recovery

Cleanup efforts began quickly, with excavation crews working to remove debris from the site as of Monday. While many community members have expressed a desire to help the Miller family through fundraising, the family has respectfully declined assistance at this time, preferring privacy as they process the loss. The Amish community generally maintains a private and low-profile lifestyle.
