San Diego Power Outages Leave Over 1,700 Customers in the Dark

A widespread series of power outages impacted more than 1,700 San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) customers across San Diego County on Tuesday, October 14, disrupting service for residents in several communities. While the cause of most outages remains under examination, SDG&E crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
Widespread Impacts Across coastal Communities
The most important impacts were felt in the area stretching from Torrey Pines to solana Beach, where over 1,045 customers experienced outages. A further several hundred customers in the Pacific Beach area were also without power, according to SDG&E’s outage map.
“The majority of the impacts affected customers in the Torrey Pines to solana Beach area,” a company release stated.
Other affected areas included Encinitas, Cardiff-By-The-Sea, and olivenhain, with 207 customers impacted. Smaller outages were reported in La Jolla/Bird Rock, affecting 22 customers, and in Mission Bay/pacific Beach, where 285 customers were without electricity.
Outage Details and Restoration Estimates
The outages began as early as 5:20 a.m.in La Mesa, impacting 150 customers, with power expected to be restored by 3 p.m. on Tuesday. most other outages began between 9:20 and 10 a.m., with estimated restoration times set for 1 p.m. for the majority of affected areas.
Here’s a breakdown of the outages as of tuesday afternoon:
- Encinitas/ Cardiff-By-The-Sea/ Olivenhain: 207 customers affected, circuit CA2, began at 9:56 a.m.,estimated restoration 1 p.m.
- North City West/ Torrey Pines/ Fairbanks Country Club: 1,045 customers affected, circuit 1081, began at 9:56 a.m., estimated restoration 1 p.m.
- Mission Bay/ Pacific Beach: 285 customers affected, circuit 57, began at 9:41 a.m., estimated restoration 12 p.m.
- La Jolla/ Bird Rock: 22 customers affected, circuit ELE1, began at 9:22 a.m., estimated restoration 11:30 a.m.
Cause of Outages Under Investigation
The cause of most of the outages remains unknown. However, SDG&E confirmed that an object making contact with an electrical system caused the outages in the Mission Bay and Pacific Beach areas. In Campo, an animal interfering with power lines was identified as the cause of a localized outage.
“Something has come into contact with our electric system and our crews are currently on scene making repairs,” a senior official stated regarding the Mission Bay/Pacific Beach incident.
