San Jose Pedestrian Death: Man Struck by Garbage Truck on Bascom Avenue
A man died early Thursday morning after being struck by a garbage truck in San Jose, California, police reported. This incident marks the 29th traffic fatality and the 14th pedestrian death in the city this year.
The collision occurred at approximately 4:05 a.m. in the 2800 block of Bascom Avenue.
According to investigators, the driver of a Peterbilt garbage truck was traveling west on Shamrock Drive before turning north into a rear alley adjacent to a strip mall. It was in this alley that the truck struck a man who was lying on the ground, covered in blankets.
Emergency responders transported the man to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin.
The garbage truck driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with law enforcement officials throughout the investigation. “The driver is assisting us in every way possible,” a police spokesperson stated.
This tragic event underscores the growing concern over pedestrian safety in San Jose. The city has already recorded a significant number of traffic-related fatalities in 2025, raising questions about traffic patterns and pedestrian visibility.
