This time the meeting between Pedro Sánchez and Alberto Núñez Feijóo lasted almost an hour. A similar time to the last time they also saw each other in Congress, at the end of August, then within the round of contacts of the PP leader for his failed investiture, and with a very similar balance sheet: the confirmation that, To this day, the bridges between the two main parties remain broken.

According to PSOE sources, in that meeting the acting President of the Government reminded the leader of the PP “of the need to respect the electoral results of the last 23-J, parliamentary democracy, and the majority will of the citizens to form a government.” of progress.” Feijóo, for his part, has accused Sánchez of perpetrating “massive electoral fraud” and has assured that they will defend democracy “with all the intensity” if an amnesty law is approved.

Just one day after the right and the extreme right, with the presence of Feijóo himself, demonstrated in the streets of Barcelona against the possibility that Sánchez could form a Government based on a political agreement with the Catalan independentists that implies, among other things, an amnesty law, Sánchez has reproached his interlocutor for the agitation in the streets.

“He has asked for institutional respect for the Spanish Constitution (the obligation to renew the CGPJ that he has been blocking for 5 years), for national symbols, which belong to all Spaniards, and for the national holiday of October 12, and restraint in his desperate attempt to agitate the street,” Ferraz sources say.

Also on the eve of the national holiday of October 12, the PSOE reproaches that “in the last two weeks the Popular Party has called two demonstrations against the investiture of Pedro Sánchez, in which the Head of State has been disrespected, and “Now he is trying to make a partisan exploitation of the National Holiday of October 12.”

The meeting takes place just twenty-four hours after the right and the extreme right took to the streets in a protest against a possible amnesty law, of which not even a draft is yet known. This same Monday, Feijóo announced that his party will file an appeal before the Constitutional Court if PSOE and Sumar finally agree with the Catalan independence forces on an amnesty.

The PP “does not give up” on holding more rallies against the amnesty

What Sánchez has told him about the demonstrations in which he has participated has not sat well with Feijóo. “He has accused me of carrying out two acts against his investiture,” the PP leader complained at the press conference after the meeting. “The PP does not give up holding rallies or concentrations to carry out acts against the investiture. In the same way that the president of the government holds rallies on weekends, it would be annoying if the president of the PP could not hold events,” he said.

In fact, the president of the PP has committed to defending democracy “with all the intensity” if an amnesty law is approved in Congress, which he has assured will be unconstitutional. And for this reason they will take all the pertinent judicial measures to appeal this law, as announced this morning, and they will repeat mobilizations like the one called last weekend in Barcelona.

“It is absolutely actionable, not only from a legal point of view but from an ethical and moral point of view. We cannot look the other way in the face of an attack on democracy. “We are going to defend democracy in Spain with all the intensity,” Feijóo insisted. “We will wait to see what the text is but in our opinion the amnesty does not fit in the Constitution,” he said.

The leader of the PP takes it for granted that Sánchez will be president. “I have seen him very confident,” he said. And that is why he has asked him to return to general elections. “If he is so sure that justice in Spain must be unequal depending on ideology, he should consult the Spaniards in a general election. If you want us to recognize ourselves as an oppressive State, the only solution is to answer the Spanish; “Let a few privileged politicians and a large majority of second-class citizens also call general elections,” he said again.

The parliamentary spokesperson for the PSOE, Patxi López, has been in charge of evaluating the meeting held between the leader of his party and that of the Popular Party in the press room of the Congress of Deputies. “The thing about repeating the elections reminds me of the child who takes the ball home because they don’t give him a penalty. Elections until when? Until he wins? He has been saying since July 23 that he has won and it turns out that he comes here to Congress and no, he has not won,” López has reacted to Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s demand.

The socialist spokesperson has stressed that the acting president of the Government and candidate for the investiture has not asked Feijóo for his support to be invested. “He has asked for something more important in democracy, which is respect. Respect for what the polls said and respect for the democratic investiture process. We were absolutely respectful of his times even though he wasted our time. And in the last two weeks he has demonstrated twice against the investiture of Pedro Sánchez,” he criticized.

The round of contacts for the investiture continues

The general secretary of the PSOE and candidate for re-election already announced after the king’s appointment that he would include Feijóo in his round of contacts, as the leader of the popular party also did during his failed investiture attempt. But Sánchez had also clarified that this meeting would be framed in the field of political courtesy and that it would not, in any case, have the purpose of asking for support for the PP, having confirmed the breaking of bridges between both parties.

Sánchez has thus resumed the round of contacts for his investiture that began last week with the leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz. This Monday morning he met with the highest representatives of the UGT unions and Workers’ Commissions. On Tuesday morning, meetings will take place with the spokespersons for the BNG and PNV. In the afternoon, the meetings will be with representatives of the Third Sector. On Wednesday morning, Sánchez will hold meetings with representatives from the world of culture, with UPN, with the Canarian Coalition and also with ERC. In the afternoon, it will be the turn of the CEOE employers’ association. On Friday he will close the week’s agenda with a meeting with representatives of EH Bildu and Junts, and then receive representatives of environmental organizations.
