Almost two decades ago manolo sierra (Cádiz, 1973) lives inEmporda i has an artistic residence in Sant Pere Pescadorspecifically in the old rice factory known as The Mill. Three years ago, the Temporary Glory weakened the structures of the ships, ruining the wing that served as the artist’s work space. The pandemic and disuse added to this perfect storm until half a year ago a team decided to reform it to turn it into a creative space open to other creatives and cultural activities under the name Secret Mill. The starting shot takes place this Wednesday, in an event behind closed doors, specifically the opening of the exhibition One night’s dream of Manolo around Sierra’s dream visions.
The art producer Tania Hirte is part of the Secret Mill team that has led the recovery of the site, which occupies almost 300 square metersand which complete the British producer and creative Nic Alderton and the art historian and art advisor Thaïs Botinas. Tania Hirte explains that the reform of the space “has been very clean” and that they have treated it “as if it were a blank canvas to maintain the feeling of an empty space that can be transformed as often as we want or that the artists who come take advantage of it in their own way». In addition, they seek to keep the location somewhat secret “to have a closer relationship with the public and with the artists, which is an intimate space”. The intention is to create “an atmosphere of networking and reflection”.
Choosing the work of Manolo Sierra to open this new stage is not accidental. Aside from his obvious link with space, is an artist “who does not look back”. Hirte rules out that it is a retrospective, but he does recover some works “that bring the space and the artist into dialogue” and considers what happens when a creator is left without a studio. If some of the pieces follow the neorealist style that already identifies Sierra, others are completely unpublished, “a new unexposed line that pulls more towards the imagination and the dreamlike, everything that could have come out of this space of intimacy where the painter spent so many hours and could immerse himself in his artistic and aesthetic imagination”. We also wanted to enhance the sensory part of the exhibition. Thus, the tour begins in the wing that has been left uncovered, in the form of a terrace, and as “the visitor enters the room, it goes from realism to dreamlike, recognized spaces, but with strange elements , not completely surreal, but rambling and closer to dreams and imagination.” It should be noted that there will be a room, which the team calls the subconsciouswhere the visitor can contemplate a kind of author’s table with objects that connect realism with subjectivity.
The Secret Mill rehab is not complete. In this sense, the space that had been Manolo Sierra’s creative studio cannot yet be used for security reasons. However, in the medium term it is planned to recover it based on the proposals that are arriving.
It is worth noting that, although this Wednesday’s opening is exclusive, the space can be visited freely from Thursday until August 31, every afternoon from 6 to 9 p.m., except Mondays. Morning visits must be arranged through the website shh.cat. Also, in September, this private gallery, hidden workshop and secret place, as they define it, will open on weekends.
