Sarah Michelle Gellar on the “Scooby-Doo” Movie: From Disappointment to Appreciation
Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed she initially envisioned a very different tone for the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film – one geared towards adults. Though, she’s as come to appreciate the family-friendly direction the movie ultimately took.
Speaking on evan Ross Katz’s Shut Up Evan Podcast, Gellar, who played Daphne, admitted she was initially upset with the final product. “There was a time where I really was upset about it. And it was not the movie I set out to make.”
Now,over two decades later, she’s a fan.”Now, in hindsight, all these years later, I totally appreciate it,” she said. “And I love it and it’ll totally make me laugh. But there was a time where it was like a disappointment in the sense of, you know, what we were sold was not what it was.”
At 22, Gellar “wanted to make the sexier, more esoteric version, but that’s not what the audiences wanted.”
The film, which also starred her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. (Fred), Matthew Lillard (Shaggy), and Linda Cardellini (Velma), was a commercial success despite mixed reviews. It spawned a 2004 sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which received even poorer critical reception. Both films were directed by Raja Gosnell.
