An Air China passenger on flight CA1921 from Beijing to Hengyang recorded a video of a wing screw coming loose and posted it on Chinese social media site Weibo. Air China said it had fixed wing screws that were falling off on one of its Boeing 737-NG passenger planes. “Noticing a loose screw in the inboard canoe fairing on the left wing of Air China flight CA1921 shared online, Air China immediately inspected the relevant parts of the aircraft and repaired the loose screws,” the statement said. The report was published in the South China Morning Post newspaper.

A video clip of the troubling scene during the flight went viral soon after it was widely shared online. The area where the screw is located is mainly used to regulate the airflow.

Aviation blogger Qiu Qing posted two reasons for this problem on Weibo. “One possibility is that the screw housing may have broken; another possibility is that the screws may have loosened due to prolonged vibration in this position,” he said.
However, the airline did not provide any official explanation as to why the screw came loose or whether it would affect the safety of the flight. The configuration deviation list (CDL) of the Boeing 737-NG states that the absence of two flap track fairing tail cones is not affected.
However, two aircraft belonging to China’s aviation industry have crashed in the past few months, despite being considered safe due to a screw loosening. This includes the unfortunate crash involving a China Eastern Airlines flight in China’s southern Guangxi province in March.
