German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today called on the Europeans to follow the example of Germany, which announced the dispatch of another Patriot air defense system to Ukraine, France Press reported.
“It’s useful right now and we want to encourage others to do it,” Scholz said upon his arrival in Brussels for the European Union summit.
On Saturday, Berlin announced it was deploying one Patriot system to help Ukraine resist Russian attacks on its cities and energy infrastructure, which have increased in recent weeks. This is the third Patriot system that Germany has delivered to Kiev.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Germany and called on its allies to “follow its example”.
Ukraine has been demanding that its Western allies send it air defense systems, particularly the Patriot, which are particularly effective at intercepting ballistic missiles.
According to the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, Kiev recently asked its allies to send it seven batteries of Patriot systems out of a total of about a hundred they have. Several European countries, including the Netherlands, have similar systems in service, writes BTA-
For his part, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today encouraged the alliance to sacrifice stockpiles in support of Ukraine, even if that means temporarily leaving them below the level recommended by the pact.
