And for a successful edition, around twenty sculptors and performers from various backgrounds have returned to residence since the beginning of September, for around a month.

Spread across six centers in the city of Ouagadougou, the sculptors work with the aim of making the sculpture shine with a thousand lights. Wood, plastics, bronzes, textiles reign supreme in these places of residence.

Sébastien Boko, Beninese visual artist, sculptor

Originally from Benin, Sébastien Boko, visual artist and sculptor, responded to this BISO 2023. Listening to him, it is with great honor that he participates in this biennial, given its major importance. “ It is one of the events that highlights African culture, the culture of sculpture in general. And since we are sculptors and we have few events that celebrate sculpture here in Africa, participating in BISO means fully living your passion, it’s experiencing something special. “, he argued straight away.

For his first participation in BISO, the native of Benin opted to pay homage to Africa, the cradle of humanity through his art. “ For this participation, I chose to work with wood, this choice because it is soft, it also goes with the theme that was chosen, because it also celebrates Africa on the one hand, it celebrates nature . I will propose an installation which will be visibly understandable soon “, he confided while maintaining the suspense.

Steve Bauras

Coming from France, Steeve Bauras appreciates this residency phase, which he says offers a framework for expression for artists. And for this edition, he intends to present something quite particular, while giving a nod to the Faso Dan Fani woven loincloth.

« When I arrived, I had a pattern in mind, and I found myself faced with this woven pattern, and obviously it is a very recurrent pattern in Faso Dan Fani. I had in mind the notion of the concessions that you have here, so it will be a perimeter delimited at ground level and also in height. For the elements, we will have the Faso Dan Fani which will be presented as a boat sail that we put to dry, currently it is outside catching the wind, the sun, the rain, the dust, it will be a elements that will be presented », Detailed Steeve Bauras.

Nyaba Ouédraogo, promoter of BISO,

According to the promoter of the BISO, Nyaba Ouédraogo, this edition is that of resilience. Considering the fragile security situation that Burkina Faso is experiencing, he reassures all those from outside who are still reluctant to go to Burkina Faso not to hesitate. Finally, he invites all sculpture fanatics to attend the grand opening scheduled for October 4, 2023, at FESPACO.

This 3rd edition is financed by the Ministry of Culture, the Cultural and Tourist Development Fund (FDCT), the Art and Culture Association BISO.
