Michael Chee-Kam Announces Retirement After Illustrious NRL Career

A former back-rower and center for three different NRL teams, michael chee-Kam, has announced his retirement from professional rugby league.
Michael Chee-Kam confirmed his decision to hang up his boots,bringing to a close a career spanning over a decade and encompassing 133 first-grade appearances. The 33-year-old’s final match came during the 2024 campaign, though he saw limited action, playing in onyl one first-grade game.
Chee-Kam’s journey began with the Manly Sea Eagles (2014-2015 and 2025), before impactful stints with the Wests Tigers (2016-2021) and the South Sydney Rabbitohs (2022-2024). He was one of nine players to depart the Sea Eagles at the conclusion of the 2025 NRL season.
From Auckland Dream to NRL Reality
The athlete’s path to professional rugby league began with a bold move from Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 17. “From a kid in Auckland NZ, who came over at 17 with nothing but a dream to play just one game in the NRL, to playing over 100 and living that dream for more than a decade – I’m beyond grateful,” Chee-Kam shared in a social media post announcing his retirement.
His talent was recognized early, earning him a spot on the 2010 Australian Schoolboys team. Chee-Kam also represented Samoa on the international stage, making three appearances for the national team, and participated in four matches during the 2019 Rugby League 9s tournament.
A Career defined by Gratitude and Faith
Beyond the on-field achievements, Chee-Kam expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the sport afforded him.He credited his success to his faith,stating,”None of it would’ve been possible without my Lord and Saviour,Jesus Christ,who has blessed me tremendously.”
the retiring player reflected on the personal milestones achieved through his career, including meeting his wife, purchasing a home, traveling the world, and starting a family – blessings he intends to cherish. He also highlighted the importance of camaraderie, noting, “Footy’s footy, but what I’ll miss most is the banter and the laughs every single day with the boys.”
Chee-Kam extended his thanks to the wests Tigers, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Manly Sea Eagles organizations, as well as all those who supported him throughout his journey. He concluded with a message of optimism, urging fans to “Don’t be sad it’s over, smile because it happened.”
