Sebastian Stan Eyes Role in “The Batman II” Amidst Pursuit of More Nuanced Roles
A potential move to the DC Universe has emerged for Sebastian Stan,with reports indicating negotiations for a role in the upcoming “the Batman II,” despite the actorS recent statements expressing a desire to move beyond superhero roles. The news arrives as Stan enjoys critical acclaim for his work in independent films,marking a turning point in his career.
The Romanian-American actor, best known for his decade-long portrayal of Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently appeared in a cameo role in the latest Captain America film. His last major MCU appearance was in Thunderbolts, a film that underperformed at the box office, coinciding with a perceived decline in public interest in the superhero genre.
This potential leap to Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Comics universe is particularly noteworthy given the longstanding rivalry between Marvel, owned by Disney, and DC. The first The Batman, released in march 2022, proved a critical and commercial success, grossing $772 million worldwide, setting high expectations for the sequel slated for release in October 2027. Production is scheduled to begin this spring.
Though, stan has publicly articulated a desire to explore more challenging and diverse roles. In a November interview on the Stronger podcast, he stated that the MCU “really helped him” grow as an actor, but he now seeks to broaden his range. “I need to try to offer something diffrent than what I’ve done before,” Stan explained.
He emphasized that his time with Marvel was foundational, stating, “Marvel projects… forever, until the end of time, [I will feel] that they really helped me grow as a person and an actor.” Yet, he views this period as a “first step,” eager to tackle more complex characters.
Stan has already begun to demonstrate this shift with roles in The Apprentice, where he portrays a young Donald Trump, and A Different Man, a film centered on a man grappling with a serious genetic disorder. He expressed admiration for the accomplishments of younger actors like Timothée Chalamet and Austin butler,suggesting he feels he is now at a stage in his career where he can achieve similar artistic heights.
2024 proved to be a landmark year for Stan in terms of critical recognition. His performance in A Different Man earned him the Silver Bear at the berlin International Film Festival. Accepting the award, he poignantly remarked, “For a little boy from romania, this means a lot. Thank you.”
The same role also secured him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical (awarded until last year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association).In his acceptance speech, Stan dedicated the award to his mother, who emigrated from Romania for a better life, and his father-in-law, Toni, for his unwavering support.
