The protest was called at a time when political tensions are at an all-time high in the country, following incidents that occurred at a demonstration by opposition parties, last weekend, contesting the election results.

The opposition in Serbia denounces alleged widespread irregularities during the recent vote that gave victory to President Aleksandar Vučić’s populists in the parliamentary and local elections. According to official results, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s SNS (nationalist right) party won 46% of the vote, compared to 23.5% for the opposition coalition.

A 24-hour blockade of traffic in the Serbian capital during preparations for the New Year was launched by a group of university students who occupied Belgrade’s main arteries with small tents, tables and chairs.

The authorities had announced a repeat of the elections in 30 polling stations for this Saturday, December 30th, but the Serbian Coalition against Violence3 said it would not participate in the polling.

“The elections that will be repeated at several polling stations cannot undo the fraud or correct the injustice that occurred on December 17. That is why we will not participate in the repeat elections”said in a statement.

President Aleksandar Vučić accuses the opposition of resorting to violence, with the aim of overthrowing the government under instructions from abroad, accusations that opposition parties have already denied.

Russia, an ally of Aleksandar Vučić, has already demonstrated its support for the Serbian authorities, reiterating that the parliamentary and local elections took place in a free and transparent manner.

International observers, including the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), present on the ground, reported “irregularities”, namely “vote buying” and “ballot box stuffing”.
