Sergio García Sánchez wins the National Illustration Award

Sergio García Sánchez, from Granada, has been awarded the National Illustration Award 2022, according to the jury’s decision made public this Tuesday, which highlighted how the artist has multiplied the possibilities of illustration “with images that narrate by themselves”.

The prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and endowed with 20,000 euros, also recognizes García Sánchez as an illustrator “who extends the book format by taking graphic narration to other places”.

In addition, the jury has pointed out that the winner “enjoys a own and unique language, in addition to a technique with a linear richness that goes into infinity”.

The Ministry of Culture and Sport grants this prize with the aim of recognizing and distinguishing the whole of the work carried out by a spanish illustrator in the field of books and letters in any of the Spanish languages.

Sergio García Sánchez (Guadix, Granada, 1967) studied Fine Arts at the University of Granada, where he is currently a full professor at the Drawing Department. His professional activity focuses on editorial illustration, comics and children’s illustration.

He has worked for “The New Yorker”, “The New York Times”, Toon Books, Dargaud, Delcourt, Dibbuks, Ediciones Santillana or Ediciones SM, among others, and has been awarded the prizes ÑH, APIM, Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, School Library Journal, Kirkus, Festival Internacional de Bande Dessinnée de Sierre & CBBD-Belgian Comic Strip Center.

In addition, he has participated in exhibitions in Paris and Angoulême (France), New York, Brussels, Frankfurt, Geneva or Barcelona.
