Gabon’s Transgabonais Railway Gets Major Boost with €200 million Investment
Libreville, Gabon – The Transgabonais Railway (SETRAG), Gabon’s vital rail link connecting the capital Libreville to the mining hub of Franceville, is set for a major upgrade thanks to a €200 million investment from the European Union (EU) and the French Development Agency (AFD). This substantial funding will accelerate modernization efforts and transform the railway into a more efficient and reliable transportation corridor.
The project, announced on January 31st, 2025, will see the replacement of 270 kilometers of concrete crosspieces, rails, and switches. Additionally, 40 kilometers of new passing tracks will be constructed, along with the installation of crucial safety features such as light signaling, security fencing, and the stabilization of unstable areas. Renovations are also planned for Owendo and Franceville stations, further enhancing the passenger experience.

The EU will contribute €20 million through its Global Gateway initiative, while the AFD will provide up to €115 million in financing, potentially supplemented by additional funding from Proparco.
According to SETRAG Director General Christian Magni, this funding will allow the company to accelerate modernization efforts between 2025 and 2028.
