Seven out of 10 taxi drivers admit to having taken passengers with mental health problems

86% of Spanish taxi drivers consider emotional health to be an important or very important issue, and 67% say they have encountered a passenger who appears to be dealing with mental health problems. That is why 35% of them would be willing to receive advice or advice from a professional on how to address these issues with passengers.

To address this type of situation, Freenow has announced its collaboration with Movember, the leading men’s health charity. The aim of this partnership is to help raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues, as well as start a conversation around key topics such as mental health, suicide prevention, and testicular and prostate cancer.

According to this year’s data from the Spanish Mental Health Confederation, 40% of Spaniards consider that their mental health is not optimal. In this context, and given that taxi drivers are a fundamental part of the platform’s business and that they are mostly male, Freenow has conducted an international survey among its male taxi drivers to find out the current situation of their mental health.

The results reveal that, although 86% of Spanish taxi drivers consider emotional health to be an important or very important issue, 74% have never sought support for the care of their mental health. Furthermore, male taxi drivers generally find it difficult to broach these topics, whether with people they are close to or not. In fact, 19% of those surveyed say they have never had conversations about mental health with anyone, while 25% have also never talked to anyone about issues such as prostate or testicular cancer. In this context, the taxi becomes a safe space to talk about personal issues.

84% of taxi drivers report that they have conversations with passengers during their journeys about current affairs (75%), the weather (58%), sports (32%), or politics (27%). And 39% even joke with passengers.

It is also highlighted that 56% of Spanish taxi drivers consider having conversations with passengers beneficial for their mental health. In fact, 80% of taxi drivers say they are open or somewhat open to passengers talking to them about their personal lives and even claim to have spoken at some point with passengers about mental health issues (16%) and about mental health issues. personal (11%).

Finally, it is striking that 7 out of 10 taxi drivers confirm having encountered a passenger who appears to be dealing with mental health problems. That is why 35% would be willing to obtain advice or professional advice on how to address these issues with passengers.
