Severe Storms Expected to Hit Chicago, Causing Concern for Busy Afternoon Commute

Following a weekend of heavy rain and flooding, the city of Chicago is bracing itself for another round of severe storms. The NBC 5 Storm Team has issued warnings for strong to severe storms on Wednesday, just in time for the busy afternoon commute as residents return home from the Fourth of July holiday.

Forecast models indicate that Wednesday morning will start out muggy and dry, with some sunshine. However, clouds and a cold front coming in from the west are expected to move in after 3 p.m., putting the entire Chicago area at a “slight” risk of severe thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center ranks this risk level two on a five-level scale.

The National Weather Service predicts that storms will hit between 3 and 10 p.m. The storms could bring quarter-sized hail, damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles-per-hour, frequent lightning, and localized heavy rainfall. Additionally, warm and humid conditions ahead of the storms are expected, with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. Afternoon heat indices may reach into the mid 90s in some areas.

In addition to the storm risk, an Air Quality Alert has been issued for Chicago, in effect through midnight on Wednesday. The NWS warns that ozone and particulate levels are expected to be at unhealthy levels for sensitive groups. Those with chronic respiratory issues are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity.

The chance for storms continues into Thursday morning, particularly for areas east of the I-55 corridor in Illinois and northwest Indiana. However, conditions are expected to clear in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the rain and storm chances will return over the weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures will lower on Thursday and into the weekend as a cold front moves through. Highs are expected to be in the mid 70s to low 80s.

As residents prepare for another round of severe weather, it is important to stay informed about any updates or emergency warnings. Stay safe and be prepared for potentially dangerous conditions during the afternoon commute.
