Sevinj Abbasova Vagif gizi was born on July 5, 1989 in Fuzuli district. In 1993, he was forcibly displaced during the Karabakh war and moved to Baku with his family. In 2006-2010, Sevinj studied at the journalism faculty of BSU.

He started cooperating with newspapers since his student years. In 2009-2012, he worked as a journalist in “Bizim Yol” and in 2012-2013, “Azadlig” newspapers. Since 2013, he has been working as a video reporter at Meydan TV.

On the night of September 20, 2015, while returning from training from Ukraine, he was detained by the police and taken to the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (Bandotdel) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He was interrogated at the Baku City Serious Crimes Investigation Department as part of the criminal case opened to Meydan TV. Despite being interrogated as a witness in a criminal case, he was banned from leaving the country in 2015-2019.

He was sued for his material showing the “carousel” operation in the 2018 presidential elections. In 2019, he was detained during filming and detained for nearly 10 hours in the 24th Police Station of Nizami district.

Conducted journalistic investigations in collaboration with OCCRP.

Since 2022, he has been working as the editor-in-chief of the independent media platform “AzbasMedia”. Ilham Aliyev and other high-ranking officials have published investigations revealing corruption crimes.

In the 2023 Media Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders, Azerbaijan is ranked 151 out of 180 countries in the world. Looking from the 151st step, a clearer picture of Sevinc’s arrest begins to emerge. But as Sevinc himself said:

“They should not think that they can stop these investigations by arresting individual individuals…”

The authorities responded to Sevinj Vagifgizina, who said that she did not want to engage in blind journalism, despite the insistences, the possibility of arrest and returned to Baku, by detaining her when she got off the plane at Heydar Aliyev Airport. In Sevinja, the director of “AbzasMedia” Ulvi Hasanli and Mohammad Kekalov were charged with the same article – smuggling. Now the government media is writing a series of articles accusing the employees of the site, which has become famous for its corruption investigations, of corruption.
