Racing Report: Multiple Incidents and Veterinary Checks Mark Recent Event
Table of Contents
A series of incidents, including bumping, tight runs, and horses being held up for clear running, characterized a recent race event, prompting post-race veterinary inspections and sampling for several competitors. Several horses faced challenging conditions throughout the course, impacting their performance and requiring stewards’ attention.
Early Race Disruptions
The race saw immediate challenges for several horses at the start. RAGNARR (H297), ridden by Z Purton, experienced interference early on, shifting out and being bumped leaving the 900-meter mark. Similarly, CELESTIAL HARMONY (K059) with B Avdulla aboard, had a difficult start, jumping only fairly and making contact with the running rail while navigating a tight position inside RUN YES RUN. RIDING HIGH (J403) and jockey H Bowman also encountered issues, bumped on jumping, and ultimately forced to race wide without cover after failing to secure a preferred position.
According to Bowman, the initial intention was to find cover, but the horse was unable to comply with instructions, leading to a compromised race. “In the early stages when I was unable to comply with my instructions, I allowed RIDING HIGH to stride forward, but when unable to cross the leaders, RIDING HIGH was obliged to race wide and without cover for the majority of the event,” Bowman stated. As a result, the horse lacked a finishing effort in the home straight.
Mid-Race Challenges and Disappointing Performances
Further complications arose during the middle stages of the race. TSUEN WAN GLORY (E403), ridden by apprentice P N Wong, shifted out at the start, was bumped, and became unbalanced. Wong reported being forced to push her mount to race outside the lead, which ultimately led to the horse fading in the home straight. The trainer, K L Man, concurred, adding that the horse’s increased weight compared to its last win may have been a contributing factor. The performance of TSUEN WAN GLORY, a recent winner, was deemed disappointing by officials, and the horse will be required to undergo a barrier trial and veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
Several other horses experienced difficulties finding clear running. KA YING POWER (H169) and THE CONCENTRATION (H465) were both notably held up between the 450 and 300-meter marks, hindering their progress.
Incidents in the Home Straight and Post-Race Procedures
The home straight saw further congestion and tactical maneuvering. Jockey J Orman, riding CONCORDE STAR (J344), reported being briefly held up behind RAGNARR before shifting to the outside and then attempting to find a clear path. He encountered difficulty near the 150-meter mark as VIVA CHALEUR drifted outwards, forcing him to shift inwards. The stewards, however, found Orman’s tactics to be reasonable given the circumstances.
Several horses underwent post-race veterinary inspections, with no significant findings reported for SHINE BRIGHT (H385), RIDING HIGH (J403), and TSUEN WAN GLORY (E403). However, RAGNARR (H297), LUCKY BLESSING (K073), and DOUBLE SHOW (G250) were all sent for sampling. GLORIOUS EXPERT (J028) experienced a particularly challenging race, bumped multiple times and forced to race wide, and will be closely monitored.
The race highlighted the unpredictable nature of thoroughbred racing, where even minor disruptions can significantly impact a horse’s performance and require careful scrutiny by racing officials.
