It was the performance that opened the season. Shai Tamino, a 19-year-old soldier from Afula, went on the stage of “The Next Eurovision Star” wearing a uniform, sang “Oli” and allowed an entire country to cry and fall apart, at the moment when we needed it the most.

Since then, and for an entire season, she has returned to the stage again and again with exciting and larger-than-life performances. Last night, in the semi-finals, the beloved singer was eliminated, days away from the finals (Tuesday, after the news, Channel 12) – and she will not represent us this year at Eurovision.

“I won’t lie that it sucks, to be eliminated right towards the end,” Shay tells Mako the day after, “but I’m very satisfied with the place I’ve reached. It’s a very respectable place. The four that made it to the finals are very deserving. Each and every one of them really deserves to win. I am very proud, both of myself and of them, satisfied and happy.”

Where do the thoughts go the day after?
“At that moment I didn’t digest the dismissal. I asked myself, is it really over now? When I went home, into my comfort zone, I slowly began to digest and plan my way forward, the musical career I want to pursue in Israel.”

In the semi-finals Shay performed “What About Us” which was originally performed by Pink and as always, turned our stomachs. “I am very satisfied with the performance. Through this song I cried out: What about love? Who can we believe? Who are we supposed to trust? The text is really powerful. I had to bring it on stage. The dancers really intensified the number.”

Shiri Maimon praised the performance: “You’ve made an amazing way here, I’m really proud of you. It moved me for you, to stand on stage like that and perform this song.” Eden Hasson commented: “The beginning of the song was very magical and elegant, everything was terribly collected. In the second verse you lost yourself a bit and it scares me terribly. We are at a very advanced stage. If you are our representative at Eurovision, there is no place for such things. There is no way you are out of rhythm, Not on a scale or entering hesitantly. Other than that – you’re perfect.” Assaf Amdorsky agreed: “I have a criticism that is starting to repeat itself. You started out gentle and soft and it was very beautiful, and again you have slipped into a place of strength and power. It’s just not the tone I like best in you.”

What did you think of the comments from Aden and Assaf?
“I will always accept with love the criticisms and comments and learn from them. I agree with Eden, things have to be perfect, especially when it’s for Eurovision and when we have to prove ourselves there. I very much agree with him, take it with love and learn from it. I also accept Amdorski’s reaction with love , but I came to shout this shout.”

In her previous chilling rendition of “Along the Sea”, Shay incorporated the Amharic language. The performance was opened by the rabbi of the congregation in Afula. “Throughout the program, I really wanted to bring elements from my community to the stage. This is music that I really like, we listen to it at home. My grandparents were present during this performance, it was the first time they saw me on stage. This performance was important to me. The arrangement was crazy , Amos Ben David, who was responsible for it, flowed with me with everything I wanted to do in the performance. I was really satisfied with it. This is one of the performances that is dearest to my heart, also because of my grandparents – but also because I could bring another side of me to this stage.”

Shay’s beloved family was also very present in the performance of “I’ll Stand by You”, when during the performance a congratulatory video from close family members was shown. Shay was moved to tears. “We are a very large family, eight people at home, six children – I am the eldest sister. We are very close to each other in the family, we share with each other. What disturbs – they say, what is sad – they come and share. This makes us a very united and close family. They support In me all this way, in everything I’ve done up until now that has to do with music.”

What went through your mind when you watched the video of the family during the performance?
“I didn’t expect what they said in the video, absolutely not. I didn’t think it would catch me off guard like that. It was very exciting and empowering. During this time we are looking for something that will strengthen us, that will keep us on the ground and give us motivation to continue. For me, that something is my family They help me a lot and always strengthen me.”

What did you learn about yourself in “The Next Eurovision Star”?
“Every time I learn something new about myself. I always knew I could act under pressure, but during this period it really challenged me. I combined the ‘Star’ with the army, it was a very intense period. I proved to myself that I can do even more. my limits musically.”

Did you feel the hug from the crowd?
“I received love that I didn’t expect to receive, unconditional love, from everyone. My loved ones always hugged me, the support never ended at any point. After the relegation, the focus is on you even more, the love continues and continues and continues. This is not expected at all. I received a lot of emotional messages throughout the season, Cry at every performance of mine and get excited. See that I really mean the text. This was one of my goals this season, to move and make people at home feel good. To know that they saw it, that they felt my intention, is the most satisfying and fun thing in the world.”

Who is your favorite in the final? Who would you like to represent us at Eurovision this year?
“Everyone is worthy. Everyone can bring something different, everyone has their own uniqueness. I’m also interested in who will win. We’ll see in the final on Tuesday.”

Where do you go from here? What is the destination?
“The goal is to continue conquering the country, to show more sides that I didn’t show in ‘The Next Eurovision Star.’ The emotional one. I’m starting to work hard on a musical career in Israel and with God’s help also abroad. I’m aiming for the biggest stages in Israel and the world.”
