  • Almost 5 years after the crime, an examination showed that both of them participated in the dismemberment – one dismembered the wrestling coach Jordan, the other – his wife Marijana
  • The experts claim that parts of the man’s corpse were separated very precisely and for a long time

Builders Plamen Shlyapashki and Georgi Nanchev, who killed and dismembered an elderly family in July 2019, dismembered their bodies using different methods. This became clear from the interrogated experts in the case against the two in the Sofia City Court.

The former wrestling coach Yordan Atanasov and his wife Marijana were liquidated by the two workers they hired to renovate their home 5 years ago. The bodies of the victims were found in jerrycans and sacks dumped by the reservoir of the Sofia village of Negovan.

After they were exposed, Shlyapashki and Nanchev gave contradictory statements. It never became clear which of the two cut up the bodies of the victims in their home. However, the examinations show that the corpses were dismembered by different people.

The experts found that “two different methods” were used on the remains of the elderly couple by persons “with different anatomical knowledge and technical skills”.

However, according to the experts, it was physically impossible for only one of them to undertake the dismemberment, which took nearly 4 hours. There are several reasons for the conclusion – Jordan’s corpse was cut precisely, more time and physical exertion were needed.

The experts also claim that there was not the same handwriting in relation to the separated parts. Today, Georgi Nanchev is more committed to the process and every detail of it. During their remand proceedings, he stands on his feet behind his lawyers, documents in hand. He also asks questions. He is upset about the examination, which he says has taken too long, and he has already been detained for five years for a crime he claims he did not commit.

Shlyapashki is calmer. It became clear to him that he had previous criminal acts. A new witness in the case even said that he suffered from the man’s raids. He was his neighbor.

“We had a feud with his brother-in-law, because they both wrecked my car, I caught his brother-in-law, but he (Shlyapashki – note ed.) told me not to hang him anymore. He lives next to me on the first floor. I only went to his apartment once and that was when the fight with his brother-in-law happened. I was looking for him to ask him why my car was broken into. I knew that Plamen was doing paint work – interior repairs, and that’s how we made contact,” said the defendant’s neighbor murder.

He learned from his neighbors about the cruel crime that his neighbor and Georgi Nanchev had committed. He was on his way home from work when he saw police cars swarming the block.

Yordan and Marijana Atanasovi were killed in their apartment on the 7th floor in a block of the capital’s central Vitosha Boulevard. According to investigators, they were shot with a silenced pistol.

Plamen shot first the woman, then the man. After the murder, together with Georgi, they went to the village of Svetovrachene, where they bought three eight-liter canisters with lids and screws, as well as strong nylon sacks for grapes. They went back to the apartment of the Atanasov family, locked themselves in the bathroom and dismembered their bodies for four hours. Then they stuffed the parts into the cans and sacks. Around 8 p.m. they loaded them onto Shlyapashki’s jeep. They were sure that none of the neighbors would suspect them, since they were renovating the house. After getting them into the car, they returned to the apartment to clean up. Nanchev washed the floor with bleach, and Shlyapashki rolled up the carpet. The two got into their cars. They planned to hide the corpses in the area of the Technical University. Plamen had a warehouse there. However, Nanchev hesitated – it was raining outside and he suggested that they hide the remains in another place because the weather was favorable.

They went to Chepintsi with two cars. When they reached the village, Nanchev got into Shlyapashki’s jeep. The two continued to Negovan. They decided to dispose of the cut human parts in a reservoir near the village. They poured the cans into the water and the reeds. They threw away the carpet and the knives with which the husbands were dismembered.

A month after the murders, a fisherman smelled a foul smell of decomposition wafting around the reservoir. At first he thought it was from a dead animal. Suddenly he saw a human skull with some hair and a piece of leg.

In the following days, police released photographs of the victims’ clothing and sought assistance in identifying them. It does not find any documents in them. He asks people who can identify their acquaintances and relatives from the provided photos to contact them.

The investigation is curious because the police first got to the perpetrators of the murder, and then it became clear who the victims were.

Criminal investigators reached Shlyapashki and Nanchev through the canisters that were found near the reservoir and the place where they bought them. The two are being followed as prime suspects. They did not seem worried, but on the contrary – went to work and even calmly walked around the area where Atanasovi’s apartment is.

After their arrest, it became clear that the motive for the liquidation of the husbands was to collect money from the couple, who recently sold an apartment in the “Krasno Selo” quarter. The Atanaso family had many properties. In a period of 10 years before their death, they managed to sell seven homes and buy three.

The case against the two began in the Sofia City Court at the beginning of 2021. The judge was Daniela Taleva. After she was appointed prosecutor to investigate accuser #1 and his deputies, the trial started over with a different judge.
