A former professional player for CAG Osaka, Hasegawa Sho (24), known as “BlackRay,” has been released following a period of detention related to a complex criminal examination, according to a statement released by Broadmedia eSports Co., Ltd.on August 7, 2025. The case, involving allegations of assault, confinement, and theft, has sparked confusion and conflicting reports from various Japanese news outlets.
Timeline of Events and Conflicting Reports
The initial arrest of seven individuals, including hasegawa, was reported in July 2025, sending shockwaves through the Rainbow Six Siege community. News organizations NHK and Asahi Shimbun subsequently reported on the re-arrest of those seven individuals on August 6th. However, Broadmedia eSports Co., Ltd.clarified that Hasegawa was not among those re-arrested,stating he had been released “on hold on the punishment” on August 6th.
“We would like to express our deepest apologies for the apologies and inconvenience caused to our fans, sponsors and all involved in the arrest of a former BlackRay player who was part of the CAG OSAKA team run by our company on suspicion of being involved in arrested and confined and injured,” a company release stated. The team severed ties with Hasegawa on July 18, 2025, prior to the unfolding legal proceedings.
The investigation, led by Investigation Division 1, centers around an incident occurring between 7:30 PM on January 28th and 1:00 AM on January 29th in Itabashi Ward. Authorities allege that a man in his 30s was repeatedly assaulted and had 111 items, with a combined market value of 3.18 million yen – including a luxury watch, gift certificates, and a smartphone – stolen from him.
The Number of Arrests: A Point of Contention
Adding to the confusion, reports initially indicated seven arrests, but Broadmedia clarified that a total of nine individuals are now implicated in the case. This discrepancy led to further scrutiny of media coverage, with Mainichi Shimbun reporting “9 people” arrested as early as August 6th.
According to Broadmedia, seven of the nine individuals were re-arrested on August 6th, with Hasegawa among the two released that same day. The company emphasized that Hasegawa’s release was specifically “not…on suspicion of robbery,” but rather a release pending further investigation.
“No re-arrest has been made,” a Broadmedia representative reportedly explained, attempting to reconcile the conflicting reports. The term “pending disposal” signifies a stage in the legal process where the prosecutor has not yet determined whether to formally indict the suspect, leaving the possibility of future charges or re-arrest open.
BlackRay’s Statement and Ongoing Investigation
Hasegawa himself addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter) on August 7th, confirming his release and stating he was not included in the recent re-arrests. “We sincerely apologize to all our fans and all involved for any inconvenience caused. He was released on August 6th on hold,” he posted.
The metropolitan Police Department has indicated that the investigation remains active and that other individuals may be involved. While Hasegawa’s release offers a degree of clarity, the full scope of the case and potential charges remain uncertain.
Broadmedia eSports Co., Ltd. has pledged to continue operating a “healthy team” and requested continued support from fans.
