Spar Magyarország achieved gross sales of HUF 1,023.2 billion in 2023 (+16%). At the same time, the volume of products sold fell by around 4% compared to the previous year.
Like managing director Gabriella Heiszler informed at the annual press conference, the retail chain closed last year with losses similar to those in 2022. However, the specific figures will not be published until the annual report at the end of May.
Spar Magyarország paid over profits tax of almost 30 billion forints into the state budget last year; Without this special charge, the company would have made a profit in 2023. In 2023, Spar spent 22 billion forints on investments – slightly less than in 2022.
At the end of the year, Spar operated 641 branches in this country, 273 of which were in the franchise system. The number of employees was around 14,000, with almost 4,000 additional employees working in the franchise network.
When asked about a possible withdrawal of Spar from Hungary, which has been much discussed in recent times, Heiszler said that this was a matter for the owner. But she doesn’t expect the company to leave the country. So far there has been no official notification of legal action by the government against Spar. Spar is interested in ending the conflict.
