Why is it celebrated today, April 23?

Why was April 23 chosen?

April 23 was symbolically selected by UNESCO to honor the legacy of Cervantes and Shakespeare to highlight the fundamental role that books play in the dissemination of knowledge and culture.

Beyond physical borders, books represent an invaluable tool for the exchange of ideas, mutual understanding and building a more diverse and peaceful world, notes the international organization.

Books and roses. Why are they given as gifts?

One of the traditions associated with Book Day is the exchange of roses and books, especially in Spain, where this custom is rooted in the celebration of Sant Jordi’s Day.

This festival, especially in Catalonia, dates back to an ancient medieval legend in which the knight Sant Jordi defeated a dragon to free a princess, and from the dragon’s blood a rose bush with red roses emerged.

Currently, Sant Jordi’s Day is celebrated in Barcelona and other Spanish cities, where the streets are filled with book and rose stalls. But the tradition has spread to other parts of the world, making April 23 a special occasion to give books and flowers as a gesture of love and appreciation.

In Mexico, for example, the Book and Rose Festival is celebrated every year at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
