A new era for Simpson College athletics is underway with the construction of a dedicated gymnastics facility. The project, fully funded by generous donors, signifies a significant investment in the college’s rapidly growing gymnastics program and promises to alleviate pressure on existing athletic spaces.
Construction officially began on the 10,000-square-foot building, located on the north end of the Simpson college campus near the softball complex. The facility is slated to open in January and will serve as a hub for both men’s and women’s gymnastics teams, as well as provide opportunities for external groups to utilize the space.
expanding Opportunities for Student Athletes
Simpson College anticipates the new facility will allow for the expansion of its gymnastics program, with plans to add both club and junior varsity teams. This expansion reflects the increasing student interest in the sport since the program’s launch in 2022.
“This is a timely investment in response to the tremendous interest and growth of gymnastics at Simpson since launching our programs in 2022,” a senior athletics official stated. “For starters, the new facility will relieve considerable pressure from high usage demands at Cowles Fieldhouse.”
Revenue Generation and Community Impact
Beyond supporting student athletes, the college expects the new facility to generate additional revenue through camps and rentals. This diversified revenue stream will further strengthen the gymnastics program and contribute to the overall financial health of the athletics department. The facility will be equipped to host both practices and competitive events, attracting regional and perhaps national competitions to Indianola, Iowa.
The $2.3 million project underscores Simpson College’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art athletic facilities and fostering a thriving athletic community. This investment not only benefits current students but also positions the college as a premier destination for aspiring gymnasts.
