About 889,400 passenger cars were imported into Russia in 10 months of 2023. This figure was 2.8 times higher than last year. More than 60% (about 546,000 units) of the total were new cars. About it reports analytical agency “Avtostat”.

About 80% of the supply of new cars was provided by China. The most popular Chinese brands were Chery (23%), Changan (10%), OMODA (9%), Geely (8%) and EXEED (7%). About 7.5% of new cars were imported from Kazakhstan, 5.8% from Kyrgyzstan, 2.5% from Belarus, 1.6% from Armenia and 1% from the UAE. It is noted that by the end of the period, imports from Kazakhstan decreased significantly, and Kyrgyzstan remains the main “transit corridor”.

Japan is the leader among used cars, its share was 54%. Armenia is in second place (14.3%). This is followed by Belarus (11.3%), South Korea (7.2%), Kyrgyzstan (4.6%) and Germany (2.9%). 27.4% of imports of used cars are from the brand Toyota. It is followed by Honda (16%), KIA (7%), BMW (6.5%), Nissan (6.3%) and Hyundai (5%).

It is expected that by the end of 2023, the number of cars imported into Russia will increase to 1.1 million. It is expected that in 2024, due to an increase in the recycling fee and an increase in domestic production, automobile imports will decrease slightly.

On September 20, it was reported that in August Japan reduced car exports to Russia by 42.6% compared to the same period in 2022. From August 9, Tokyo banned the import of gasoline and diesel cars with an engine capacity of more than 1.9 liters to Russia, as well as hybrid cars. The Japanese authorities made this decision at the end of July after the introduction of the 11th package of EU sanctions against Russia. The restrictions apply to both new and used cars.
