Sinners: Record-Breaking 16 Oscar Nominations | Oscars 2026

Sinners Shatters Oscar Record with 16 Nominations, Signaling a Shift in Academy Recognition

The supernatural thriller Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, has made history by receiving a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations, surpassing the previous high of 14 shared by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. The film, starring Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers navigating racism and the supernatural in 1930s Mississippi, has already grossed $368 million worldwide and is poised to be a major contender at the March 15th ceremony.

A Historic Sweep for Sinners and its Filmmakers

The nominations for Sinners span numerous categories, including Best Picture, Director, Leading Actor, Supporting Actor (for Delroy Lindo), Supporting Actress (for Wunmi Mosaku), and the Academy’s inaugural Casting prize. Ruth E. Carter’s nomination for Costume Design marks her fifth overall, making her the most-nominated Black woman in the Oscars’ 97-year history. Additionally, Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s nomination for Cinematography represents only the fourth time a woman has been recognized in that category.

Coogler himself expressed surprise at the extent of the nominations, recounting how his father was the first to realize the magnitude of the achievement. “My dad was keeping count next to me,” Coogler told Deadline. “And when he said [it was 16] I was like, ‘Dad, you got it wrong. There’s no way it’s that many.’” He later added that his father “has been gleefully pointing out how right he was: ‘So you trust the articles, you don’t trust my counting?’”

Competition and Predictions: A Tight Race for Gold

Despite its impressive showing, industry analysts predict Sinners may not replicate the win totals of its nominated predecessors. Currently, the countercultural comedy One Battle After Another is closely trailing with 13 nominations and has dominated the awards season thus far.

Paul Thomas Anderson, a veteran of the Oscars with 11 prior nominations, is widely favored to win both Best Picture and Best Director for One Battle After Another. Teyana Taylor is also considered a frontrunner in the Supporting Actress category. Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro also received nominations for their performances in the film, though Chase Infiniti’s omission from the Leading Actress shortlist was noted as a surprise. Kate Hudson’s inclusion in the same category for Song Sung Blue also raised eyebrows.

International Films and a More Diverse Academy

This year’s nominations reflect a growing trend toward international recognition, with films like Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, and It Was Just An Accident receiving multiple nods. Sentimental Value emerged as a strong contender with nine nominations, including four acting nominations for Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Elle Fanning, Renate Reinsve, and Stellan Skarsgård.

Wagner Moura’s nomination as Best Actor for The Secret Agent marks a historic moment as the first Brazilian actor to receive the honor. The film is also nominated for Casting, International Feature Film, and Best Picture. This surge in international representation aligns with the Academy’s evolving demographics, with over a quarter of its nearly 11,000 voters now residing outside the US. A 2014 Los Angeles Times survey revealed a predominantly male and white voting body, but recent efforts have increased female representation to at least 35% and ethnic minority representation to at least 25%.

Other Notable Nominees and Snubs

Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet also performed well, securing eight nominations, including a likely win for Jessie Buckley as Best Actress. However, Paul Mescal was considered a surprising snub in the Supporting Actor category. Buckley expressed her disappointment, stating to The Hollywood Reporter, “I think he’s extraordinary in this film… I know I’ve met a partner for life in doing this with him… There’s no part of what I created or what we created in this story which exists without Paul and what he poured into this story.”

Timothée Chalamet is the favorite to win Best Actor for Marty Supreme, narrowly edging out Adrien Brody, who won last year for The Brutalist. A victory for Chalamet would make him the second-youngest Best Actor winner in history. Gwyneth Paltrow, however, did not receive a nomination for her return to cinema in Marty Supreme, and other stars like Dwayne Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, George Clooney, and Cynthia Erivo were also overlooked. Wicked: For Good failed to secure any nominations, including one for Ariana Grande, while Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly also went unrewarded.

The second round of Oscar voting begins on February 26th, with a new rule requiring voters to verify they have viewed all nominated films within their category. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will take place on March 15th, preceded by the BAFTA Awards on March 3rd, overseen by Alan Cumming. While One Battle After Another and Hamnet garnered significant attention at the Golden Globe Awards, their impact on the Oscars remains to be seen, given the differing category structures.
