Veteran actor Sir Ben Kingsley has expressed his surprise at revisiting the role of Trevor Slattery for a fourth time, a character he admits he initially envisioned as a one-off performance. The acclaimed actor is set to reprise his role in the upcoming Disney+ series, wonder Man, an eight-episode production slated to launch later this week as part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Kingsley’s portrayal of Slattery first captivated audiences in 2013’s Iron Man 3, where he initially appeared as a convincing, yet ultimately false, incarnation of the villainous Mandarin. The character’s journey continued in the 2014 short film All Hail the King and again in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, solidifying Slattery as a surprisingly enduring figure within the MCU.
In Wonder Man, Kingsley will once again portray Slattery, this time as a fellow actor alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Simon Williams, who is preparing for a film remake of the titular superhero. According to Kingsley, Slattery is an aspiring actor who has consistently fallen short of achieving mainstream success. “Trevor is an aspiring actor who never quite hit the spotlight,” he explained to Radio Times. “After falling among thieves and posing as a murderous terrorist, he is imprisoned, then broken out of prison, and so returns to Los Angeles to try to recreate himself as a serious actor. This is my fourth visit to Trevor. He is a character that I would never have dreamt would span 15 years of my career.”
Reflecting on his experience with Shang-Chi, kingsley praised the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, for his clear and meaningful storytelling. He stated at the film’s 2021 premiere that Cretton’s motives were “pure, crystal clear, lucid, pure motives… life enhancing and they’re not patronising.” Kingsley also highlighted the welcoming and inclusive environment on set, noting that the cultural backgrounds of his colleagues were “immaterial” and “irrelevant.”
When asked to identify his most prized possession among his numerous accolades, the Oscar-winning actor – recognized for his 1982 performance in Gandhi – revealed a deep reverence for the British monarchy.”My knighthood,” Kingsley stated.”I revered greatly the late Queen Elizabeth, her father’s nerve and the family’s nerve during the Second World War.”
The longevity of Slattery’s character is a testament to the MCU’s willingness to embrace unexpected elements and subvert expectations. Initially presented as a false mandarin, a decoy created by the real villain, Slattery’s comedic timing and Kingsley’s performance resonated with audiences.
Why did this happen? The character’s initial purpose was to mislead audiences about the true Mandarin, played by Tony Leung in Shang-Chi. Who is Trevor Slattery?
