European Film Awards 2023: A Night of Empathy,Political Statements,and Solidarity
The European Film Awards 2023,held in Berlin,were marked by a strong emphasis on empathy,political awareness,and solidarity with filmmakers facing oppression. Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt took home the Best Screenplay award for their film The Worst Person in the World.
Trier highlighted the importance of understanding others, stating, “The other is not the enemy,” and encouraged continued support for cinema.
the ceremony, presided over by Academy President Juliette Binoche, intentionally addressed current global events. it opened with a powerful statement from Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, currently facing imprisonment upon his return too Iran, regarding the violence and suffering in his homeland.
Panahi warned that the risk of violence is global, stating, “This is not just about Iran, but the whole world is at risk. Violence has become normalized, it spreads, it is indeed contagious. No one is safe. Neither in Iran nor in the rest of the world.” He emphasized the responsibility of filmmakers to speak out against injustice, arguing that silence equates to complicity.
