Six North Korean officers were reportedly killed in the Russian-occupied area near eastern Donetsk, where Ukrainian and Russian troops are engaged in close combat.
On the 4th (local time), Ukraine’s Kiev Post, citing sources, reported that six North Korean military officers were killed in a missile attack by the Ukrainian military the previous day. Additionally, it was reported that, separate from the deaths, more than three North Korean soldiers were injured.
According to Russian social media (SNS), North Korean military officers and soldiers were observing a Russian military training demonstration.
This is not the first time North Korean troops have been confirmed entering Russian-occupied areas. Ukrainian intelligence officials reported last year that North Korean military personnel, including engineer units, were carrying out activities such as recovery in Russian-occupied areas.
The Ukrainian government also claimed that Russia was planning to mobilize North Korean workers for various construction work in occupied areas such as Donetsk and Luhansk.
Russia is evaluated to have become closer to North Korea after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, purchasing North Korean ammunition and missiles.
According to the National Intelligence Service, it was revealed that Russia received more than 1 million multiple rocket launchers and howitzers from North Korea and purchased KN-23, a North Korean-made ballistic missile.
Russia’s acquisition of such military supplies from North Korea is a violation of the UN Security Council resolution prohibiting all forms of arms trade with North Korea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also defined North Korea and Iran as accomplices to Russian war crimes, saying, “North Korea and Iran are killing Ukrainians by providing weapons and helping Russian President Vladimir Putin steal Ukrainian land.”
