A widespread weather-related emergency is unfolding across the northern Netherlands, with numerous traffic incidents reported this morning due to icy roads and dense fog. Authorities have issued a code yellow warning, urging extreme caution for all travelers.
A surge of accidents began early this morning, with reports flooding in from across Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe provinces. The KNMI-the Dutch national meteorological service-declared the code yellow alert due to the combination of freezing fog and perhaps icy road surfaces,a situation expected to persist until 10 a.m. local time for most of the country, excluding the Wadden Islands and the three southern provinces.
Head-On Collision on N366 Near Alteveer
A particularly serious incident occurred on the N366-near alteveer, Groningen-just before 7 a.m. local time. Two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in injuries to both drivers.According to reports from RTV Noord, photographs from the scene depict a road surface covered in a sheen of ice. A local photojournalist confirmed that both cars were occupied by a single driver each, and one individual required extrication by the fire brigade. Both motorists were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
This incident follows a fatal three-car accident on the same stretch of road last Wednesday, where a 25-year-old individual tragically lost their life. Slippery conditions were also suspected to have contributed to that earlier crash.
Traffic Disruption and Multiple Vehicles Affected
Beyond the head-on collision, the hazardous conditions have led to widespread disruption. On the N34-near borger-several vehicles lost control and veered off the road, with some ending up in ditches. While the extent of any injuries remains unknown, the incidents have caused a notable traffic jam as drivers proceed with extreme caution.
Reports indicate that several trucks became stranded on an incline, unable to gain sufficient traction to continue uphill.”They slowed down because of the slippery conditions, but were then unable to find enough grip on the road surface to climb the steeper section of road,” a witness reported.
Incidents Reported in Friesland and Leeuwarden
Further north, a vehicle left the N359-near wommels, Friesland-colliding with roadside signage before ending up in a ditch. Fortunately, the driver escaped without injury, and emergency services were alerted by passersby. one lane was temporarily closed to facilitate vehicle recovery.
Near Leeuwarden, entrances and exits to the N31-were closed early this morning after multiple vehicles skidded on icy surfaces and viaducts. At least one car impacted the roadside barrier, according to Omrop Fryslân. A particularly dangerous situation has developed on the N31 near Harlingen, in the direction of the Afsluitdijk-where ice formation beneath an aqueduct has forced a complete closure.Rijkswaterstaat-the Dutch public works agency-described the area as “one big ice sheet” due to water leakage from the tunnel structure freezing over.
KNMI Warns of Prolonged Hazardous Conditions
The KNMI-is warning that the combination of fog and icy conditions is likely to persist well into the morning. The agency attributes the slipperiness to freezing fog-and the potential freezing of wet road sections. Visibility in areas of dense fog is reduced to as little as 200 meters, posing a sudden and unexpected hazard to road users.
The current code yellow warning underscores the urgent need for drivers to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and increase following distances. Authorities are advising against non-essential travel until conditions improve.
